(0:04) Well, once again, my duty to bring the lesson is cut, and Gene is on vacation. (0:16) I want to have part two of the lesson that I started last week, (0:26) If the Lord Stirred You Up. (0:29) Now, tonight’s lesson will be taken from 1 Kings chapter 11.
(0:39) As I said, this is a continuation of what I began last week. (0:45) We talked about David inspiring the life of King Saul. (0:52) After finding out where David was, Saul pursued David with 3,000 men.
(1:04) Arriving at the location of David, he and his army was camped opposite of the hill where David was. (1:20) David and one of his men went in to the camp of Saul and his army. (1:30) Taking the spear of Saul and his water jug, he left.
(1:37) Once safe on the hill opposite King Saul, he awakened the people. (1:44) He chided Abner, the commander under the king, for not protecting his king. (1:58) Then he asked Saul why he was after him.
(2:04) David then said, If the Lord has stirred you up, and this is in 1 Samuel chapter 26. (2:21) Tonight, though, I’m going to center my lesson from verse 14. (2:36) And the Lord stirred up an adversary unto Solomon.
(2:44) Hey there, the Edomite. (2:48) He was of the king’s seed in Edom. (2:53) And also in verse 23, it says, And God stirred him up another adversary.
(3:05) Risen the son of Eliadah, which fled from his Lord. (3:13) Hey, these are king of Zobah. (3:17) Now, I’m using the King James because I believe, if I’m not mistaken, in the New King James Version, (3:30) where it says, And the Lord stirred up, in verse 14, in place of stirred up is the word raised.
(3:45) But that’s in the New King James Version. (3:48) However, it is said, though, that the Lord stirred up an adversary unto Solomon. (4:01) Hey there, the Edomite.
(4:04) He was of the king’s seed in Edom. (4:10) He stirred these adversaries against Solomon. (4:19) In particular, though, here, hey there, the Edomite, it is because Solomon led his wives, (4:34) leading them into idolatry.
(4:40) And we have this in chapter 11, one through eight. (4:51) But King Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, (5:00) women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites, (5:10) of the nations concerning which the Lord said unto the children of Israel, (5:17) Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you. (5:24) For surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.
(5:32) Solomon claimed unto these in love. (5:36) He had 700 wives, princesses, and 300 concubines. (5:45) And his wives turned away his heart.
(5:51) For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods. (6:02) And his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. (6:12) For Solomon went after Ashtoreth, the goddess of Sidonians, (6:21) and Milcom, the abomination of Ammonites.
(6:28) And Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, and went not fully after the Lord, as did David his father. (6:39) Then did Solomon build a high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, (6:49) in the hill that is before Jerusalem, (6:53) and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon. (7:01) And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.
(7:14) And so we see that Solomon, when he was old, then departed from the Lord, (7:26) and went after these idols of these nations that were around him. (7:36) And of course, when you deviate from the law, or when you turn away from God, (7:48) then that makes God angry. (7:52) And it is said in verse 9, (7:56) And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the Lord God of Israel, (8:06) which had appeared unto him twice.
(8:13) Well, you know, that may surprise some that they’ve heard of Solomon, his wisdom, (8:25) and God appearing to him twice. (8:35) We know at the one time that God appeared to him in a dream, (8:43) and asked Solomon what he wanted. (8:49) Well, Solomon asked for wisdom, (8:55) that he would have wisdom to know how to guide the people.
(9:06) And there was another time that God appeared to him, (9:11) but God appeared unto him, and he talked to God. (9:17) God talked to him. (9:20) And he was with God, and God was with him.
(9:25) But he let all these strange women lead him astray, and disangered him. (9:35) And had commanded, in verse 10, (9:38) And had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods. (9:47) But he kept not that which the Lord commanded.
(9:53) We’re in 1 Kings 11, and we’re at verse 11. (10:08) Wherefore, the Lord said unto Solomon, (10:13) Forasmuch as this is done of thee, (10:17) thou hast not kept my covenant and my statute, (10:22) which I have commanded thee. (10:26) I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, (10:30) and will give it to thy servant, (10:37) notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it, (10:42) for David thy father’s sake, (10:45) but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son.
(10:51) Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom, (10:56) but will give one tribe to thy son, (11:00) for David my servant’s sake, (11:04) and for Jerusalem’s sake, which I have chosen. (11:10) So, you know, we can see what is happening. (11:21) And sometimes we never know how far reaching (11:28) our sinfulness can go.
(11:34) But because Solomon departed from him, (11:39) he said that the kingdom would be divided. (11:45) And it will be divided, it will be rendered. (11:52) And so we have then in verse 14, (11:57) And the Lord stirred up an adversary unto Solomon, (12:04) Hathab the Edomite.
(12:07) He was the king’s seed in Edom. (12:13) For it came to pass, when David was in Edom, (12:18) and Joab the captain of the host was gone up to bury the slain, (12:24) after he had smitten every male in Edom. (12:30) For in six months did Joab remain there with all Israel, (12:37) until he had cut off every male in Edom.
(12:42) That Hadab fled, he and certain Edomites (12:47) of his father’s servants to go into Egypt. (12:53) Hadab being yet a little child. (13:00) And they arose out of Midian, and came to Paran, (13:07) and they took men with them out of Paran, (13:12) and they came to Egypt, and the Pharaoh king of Egypt, (13:18) which gave him a house, and appointed him bishops, (13:23) and gave him land.
(13:26) So Hadab is in Egypt, (13:32) and Hadab found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh, (13:38) so that he gave him to wife, the sister of his own wife, (13:45) the sister of Tophanes, the queen. (13:51) And the sister of Tophanes bore him Ganubis, his son, (13:57) whom Tophanes weaned in Pharaoh’s house. (14:01) And Ganubis was in Pharaoh’s household among the sons of Pharaoh.
(14:09) And when Hadab heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers, (14:16) and that Joab the captain of the host was dead, (14:22) Hadab said to Pharaoh, (14:24) Let me depart, that I may go to mine own country. (14:30) Then Pharaoh said unto him, (14:34) What hast thou lacked with me, that, behold, (14:39) thou sickest to go to thine own country? (14:43) And he answered, Nothing, howbeit let me go anywhere. (14:51) And so also in verse 23, as we read before, (15:03) we have God stirring up another adversary, (15:10) raising the son of Elijah, (15:14) Elijah, which fled from his lord, Hadadezer, king of Zuba.
(15:22) And he gathered men unto him, and became captain over a band, (15:29) when David slew them of Zuba. (15:33) And they went to Damascus, and dwelt therein, (15:37) and reigned in Damascus. (15:41) And he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, (15:47) besides the mischief that Hadad did.
(15:51) And he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria. (15:59) Now, we have the introduction to Jeroboam. (16:10) The son of Nebat, the epithet of Zerida, (16:19) Solomon’s servant, whose mother’s name was Zerah, (16:26) a widow woman, even he lifted up his hand against the king.
(16:33) And this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king. (16:39) Solomon bent up Nilo, and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father. (16:48) And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor.
(16:53) And Solomon see’d the young man, that he was industrious. (16:58) He made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph. (17:05) And it came to pass, that when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, (17:12) that the prophet Ahijah, the charlonite, found him in the way.
(17:19) And he clad himself with the new garment. (17:23) And they too were alone in the field. (17:29) And Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him, and ripped it in twelve pieces.
(17:41) And he said to Jeroboam, take these ten pieces. (17:47) For thus said the Lord, the God of Israel, (17:52) Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, (17:56) and I will give ten tribes to thee. (18:01) But he shall have one tribe.
(18:04) For my servant David’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake, (18:09) the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel. (18:16) Because they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth, (18:23) the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh, the god of the Moabites, (18:30) and Milcom, the god of the children of Ammon. (18:34) And have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in mine eyes, (18:40) to keep my statutes and my judgments, as David his father.
(18:48) Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand, (18:53) but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David, (18:59) my servant’s sake, whom I chose. (19:02) Because he kept my commandments and my statutes. (19:06) But I will take the kingdom out of his son’s hand, (19:11) and I will give it unto thee, even ten tribes.
(19:18) And unto his son will I give one tribe, (19:22) that David, my servant, may have a light always before me (19:28) in the city which I have chosen to put my name there. (19:34) And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desires, (19:44) and shall be king over Israel. (19:50) And it shall be, if thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, (19:56) and wilt walk in my ways, to do that which is right in my sight, (20:04) to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did.
(20:10) Then I will be with thee, and build thee a sure house, (20:15) as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee. (20:23) And I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not forever. (20:33) Solomon sought, therefore, to kill Jeroboam.
(20:40) And Jeroboam arose and fled into Egypt, unto Shashet king of Egypt, (20:50) and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon. (20:54) So we have now what has led to Jeroboam leaving and going into Egypt (21:08) as did the other people of Edom that were down in Egypt. (21:20) But now we’re going to have Rehoboam and Jeroboam.
(21:32) Now what Jeroboam and the people did was when Solomon died (21:41) and Rehoboam his son was on his throne. (21:51) And Jeroboam heard that Solomon had died. (22:00) So he came back to Jerusalem.
(22:05) And Jeroboam and the people approached Rehoboam. (22:11) And they came to Rehoboam. (22:18) And in verse 4 they said to Rehoboam, (22:25) Thy father made our yoke grievous.
(22:29) Now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father and his heavy yoke (22:36) which he put upon us lighter, and we will serve thee. (22:44) And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days. (22:49) Then come again to me.
(22:53) And the people departed. (22:56) Now Rehoboam asked those that were old men (23:03) that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived (23:07) and asked, How do you advise that I may answer this people? (23:18) And they spake unto him, saying, (23:22) If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day (23:25) and wilt serve them and answer them and speak good words to them, (23:32) then they will be thy servants forever. (23:37) But Rehoboam forsook the old men’s advice which they had given him (23:49) and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him (23:55) and which stood before him.
(23:59) And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people (24:05) who have spoken to me, saying, (24:09) Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter. (24:16) And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, (24:22) Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, (24:31) Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us. (24:38) Thus shalt thou say unto them, (24:40) My little fingers shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
(24:45) And now, whereas my father did lay thee with a heavy yoke, (24:53) I will add to your yoke. (24:55) My father hath chastised you with whips, (25:00) but I will chastise you with scorpions. (25:05) So Rehoboam listened to these young men’s advice.
(25:13) So when Jeroboam and the people came to Rehoboam, (25:20) Rehoboam spoke just as those young men advised him, (25:27) and he spoke to them as they said. (25:34) And then the people, in verse 16 of chapter 12, (25:40) So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, (25:46) the people answered the king, saying, (25:50) What portion have we in David? (25:53) Neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse. (25:57) To your tents, O Israel.
(26:01) Now see to thine own house, David. (26:05) So Israel departed unto their tents. (26:09) But as for the children of Israel which grew out in the cities of Judah, (26:15) Rehoboam reigned over them.
(26:18) And Rehoboam had sent Adam, (26:27) one that was to take tribute from the people. (26:34) But all Israel stoned him with stones that he died. (26:37) And that caused Rehoboam to gather those under him to go after the people.
(26:52) And the tribe of Benjamin was with Rehoboam. (26:59) But God sent a prophet. (27:06) But the word of God came unto Shimele, the man of God, (27:14) saying, Speak to Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, (27:19) and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, (27:24) and to the remnant of the people, saying, (27:27) Thus saith the Lord, you shall not go up (27:30) nor fight against your brethren, the children of Israel.
(27:35) Return, every man, to his house, (27:39) for this thing is from me, that is from the Lord. (27:45) They hearkened therefore to the word of the Lord (27:48) and returned to the park according to the word of the Lord. (27:56) And now, Jeroboam.
(28:03) Jeroboam, he is ruler over Israel. (28:09) And what we have is one tribe would be with Judah, (28:16) and ten would go to Israel. (28:19) We will have the northern kingdom and the southern kingdom.
(28:24) The southern kingdom would be known as Israel, (28:29) or the northern kingdom would be known as Israel, (28:33) and the southern kingdom would be known as Judah. (28:37) But now, we’re going to have Jeroboam now and what he did. (28:45) We’re going to see that Jeroboam said in his heart, (28:55) Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David.
(29:00) And if this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, (29:10) then shall the heart of this people turn again unto the Lord, (29:16) even unto Rehoboam, king of Judah. (29:21) And they shall kill thee and go again to Rehoboam, king of Judah. (29:30) Now remember, God keeps telling the people, (29:36) If you will listen to me, if you will walk in my ways and do what I say, (29:45) it will be right with you.
(29:48) You will be blessed. (29:52) And that is just exactly what Jeroboam heard from the prophet that came to him, (30:06) telling him to take the ten pieces of his garment, (30:12) which would mean that he would take ten tribes of Israel. (30:15) And if you would follow me, (30:20) say that thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, (30:25) and will walk in my ways to do that is right in my sight, (30:32) to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did, (30:38) that I will be with thee, and build thee a sure house, (30:44) as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee.
(30:53) But Jeroboam has not listened to what that prophet said. (31:05) He’s putting aside what has been said to him. (31:14) Whereupon, in verse 28 of 1 Kings 12, (31:21) Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, (31:28) and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem.
(31:35) Behold thy gods, O Israel, (31:37) which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. (31:43) And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan. (31:53) And this thing become a sin, (31:57) for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.
(32:03) And he made an house of high places, (32:09) and made priests of the lowest of the people, (32:13) which were not of the sons of Levi. (32:18) And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, (32:24) on the fifteenth day of the month, (32:28) like unto the feast that is in Judah. (32:30) And he offered upon the altar.
(32:35) So did he in Bethel, (32:38) sacrificing unto the calves that he had made. (32:44) And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places, (32:50) which he had made. (32:51) So he offered upon the altar, (32:55) which he had made in Bethel, (32:58) the fifteenth day of the eighth month, (33:02) even in the month, (33:04) which he had devised in his own heart, (33:09) and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel.
(33:14) And he offered upon the altar and burnt incense. (33:22) And so we see what happened. (33:25) And you know, later, whenever speaking of Israel, (33:37) it is said that Jeroboam made or influenced the people (33:49) to serve the idols in Dan and Bethel.
(33:59) And it is said that Jeroboam made Israel to sin. (34:08) Now, in Judah, there were good kings, (34:16) then there were bad kings that did not worship God. (34:25) Then there were kings that were good.
(34:28) But in Israel, because of Jeroboam’s sin, (34:36) from the king down, (34:38) there was no good king that sat on the throne. (34:48) And so we see how far-reaching, though, that it came, (34:57) that the sin that Solomon had committed in his old age, (35:06) deposited from the Lord. (35:09) And it is said that the Lord stirred up adversaries against them.
(35:17) So this is of the Lord’s doing. (35:22) The dividing of the kingdom was of the Lord’s doing. (35:29) And this ought to be a lesson and a warning to all of us.
(35:36) Let us be careful. (35:38) Let us be true until the end of our days. (35:45) That even the wisest man that lives, (35:54) who could be led astray, (35:58) then, you know, it’s God forbid that any of us lets it happen to us, (36:06) that we depart from God at any age.
(36:13) Are there no other comments or questions? (36:19) Yes, Jim. (36:21) Concerning Solomon and the books that he has written, (36:26) at the end of Proverbs, where he says, (36:33) Now all that has been heard here is the concluding of the matter. (36:37) Here God keeps His commandments.
(36:40) First, He says, (36:42) When he writes that, (36:45) as compared to 1 Kings 10, (36:48) where it says that even in his old age, (36:52) he was still worshipping the false god. (36:55) You know, when you were reading that, (36:58) for instance, Solomon was worshipping the Chimash, (37:02) and Esherah, and Noah, basically, (37:07) and in his old age. (37:10) So when did he write Ecclesiastes? (37:15) Is it 10, 12, 13, I believe it is, (37:19) where he makes the conclusion, (37:22) Here God keeps His commandments.
(37:24) Was that on his deathbed? (37:26) Or, I hope, for his sake? (37:29) Or, you know, do we know if Solomon repents it? (37:35) Well, if I recall, in Ecclesiastes, (37:41) he is writing that he’s done everything. (37:47) That he’s sought after all the things that he’s sought after. (37:55) Then he said, this is vexation of the soul.
(38:00) And, of course, I don’t know when in his life (38:13) that he wrote Ecclesiastes, (38:15) but I would think that when he wrote it, (38:20) that he was pretty far in age, (38:27) because he’s just saying, you know, (38:32) I’ve tried just about everything. (38:36) I’ve gone after this, I’ve done that, (38:40) and he found out that what he had gone after (38:44) was not satisfying to his soul. (38:49) And so, I just… (38:52) I read it all the time for myself.
(38:53) Yeah, to go in there and see just about (38:58) what he did right there. (39:00) If he wrote that, or if he wrote it near the end of his life, (39:09) because now… (39:10) He keeps that thing in motion (39:13) for the northern Israel ten tribes (39:17) to basically turn their backs on God. (39:22) So it’s very vicarious law.
(39:25) Yeah, it’s… (39:27) All this is from God, and you know, (39:33) this ought to teach us a lesson that (39:39) God can stir up things, you know. (39:44) And just use the Bible (39:49) and try to talk to people. (39:53) They’ll evade you like you’ve got a disease or something, (39:57) a contagious disease.
(39:59) They don’t want to talk about it. (40:01) Now, some people will give you, (40:06) you know, will say you’re doing pretty good, (40:13) but it’s sad that within the church (40:16) that some members will look at the message (40:24) that the person gives, (40:26) the preacher gives, (40:28) and gives them a hard time about it, you know. (40:32) You know, what he’s saying, (40:38) that that gets stirred up.
(40:41) It’s kind of riled up about it. (40:44) I want to hear it. (40:46) But now I’m going to have the third testament, (40:52) and I’m going to take it from in the New Testament.
(40:58) And I’m going to… (41:01) There’s about three places where (41:04) stirred is used, or stirred up, (41:09) or the word stirred is used. (41:14) And how it’s used. (41:17) But we can have our minds stirred up, okay? (41:23) But our minds ought to be stirred in the right direction.
(41:28) Okay? (41:29) If there’s nothing else, (41:31) well, let us go to God in prayer and close. (41:36) God in heaven, we thank you for this hour (41:40) that we spent in discussion of your word. (41:46) Father in heaven, we pray that we will (41:53) take what lesson we have learned tonight (41:56) and apply it to our hearts and our everyday lives.
(42:01) Maybe show other people that (42:05) they can come to you and live a godly life. (42:13) For we know that there are those (42:15) that will fight against what you say. (42:24) We can search your word and know (42:28) that when those that were your workers, (42:34) the apostles, and those that taught your word, (42:42) that others opposed them greatly, (42:47) but they carried on.
(42:51) And yes, when people hear your word, (42:55) it does stir them up. (42:57) Stir them against the word, (43:00) but we pray that we can have our minds (43:04) stirred for your word (43:07) and that we can teach your word. (43:12) We pray that you’ll be with Lottie (43:15) as he is still feeling dizzy (43:18) and having his blood pressure high.
(43:22) We just pray that you’ll be with him (43:27) and be with Carol as she ministers to him (43:33) and helps him. (43:34) We pray, oh Father, that you’ll be with her (43:37) as she deals with her health issues. (43:43) We pray for all the sick in our congregation.
(43:49) We pray that you’ll be with them (43:52) and that you’ll bless them and their loved ones. (43:57) We pray for the people that care for them (44:01) and Father in Heaven, (44:05) that we pray that they will be healed (44:09) so that they can be up and about (44:11) and doing what they need to be doing. (44:17) Now Father in Heaven, be with us (44:19) as we depart.
(44:23) And when we come together again, (44:27) may we come and give you the praise (44:30) in Jesus' name. (44:32) Amen.
