After Baptism, What Then?

2 Peter 3:17-18

You, therefore, believed, knowing this beforehand, be on you guard lest, being carried away by the error of unprincipled men, you fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen

Things to Remember…

You are a new creature

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17, Therefore, if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

  • Romans 6:3,4, Or do you not know that all of us who have been immersed into Christ Jesus have been immersed into His death? Therefore, we have been buried with Him through immersion into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

You are a babe in Christ

  • 1 Corinthians 3:1-2, And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, to babes in Christ. I gave you milk to drink not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able….

  • Hebrews 5:12-14, For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of mil is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.

You are in a critical period

  • Ephesians 4:14, As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;…

  • 1 Peter 5:8, Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

You face the possibility of falling

  • Hebrews 3:12-15, Take care, brethren, lest there should be in anyone of you an evil unbelieving heart, in falling away from the living God. But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” lest anyone of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of

sin. For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end; “TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VIOCE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS, AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME.”

  • 1 Corinthians 10:12-13, Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you, but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will bot allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.

You are to be a good example

  • 1 Timothy 4:12, Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.

  • 2 Timothy 2:7, Consider what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.

Things to Do…

Put God first

  • Matthew 6:33, But seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.

  • Matthew 22:37, And He said to him, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOU GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.”

Study the Word of God

  • 1 Peter 2:1-3, Therefore, putting aside all malice and all guile and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the Word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.

  • James 1:21, Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the Word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

Be fervent in prayer

  • Hebrews 4:14-16, Since then we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need. Phil 4:6-7, Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let you requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard you hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  • Colossians 4:2, Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving;

Be diligent in assembling

  • Hebrews 10:24,25, and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another and all the more, as you see the day drawing near.

  • Acts 2:42, And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

  • Acts 20:7, And on the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to depart the nest day and he prolonged his message until midnight.

  • 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and He broke it, and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this remembrance of Me.” In the same way He took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

Help save others

  • Matthew 28:19,20, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, immersing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, AI am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

  • 1 Corinthians 9:19-27, For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, that I might win the more. Ad to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the Law, as under the Law, though not being myself under the Law. That I might win those who are under the Law; to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, that I might win those who are without law.

To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, that I may by all means save some. And I do all things for the sake of the gospel, that I may become a fellow partaker of it.

Do you not know that those who run in a race all fur, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. And everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.

Therefore, I run in such a way as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I buffet my body and make it my slave, lest possible, after I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.
