The Graveclothes of Jesus, Part 1
Scripture Reading
1st Reader (0:04 - 0:30): John Kessler
John 11:43-44:
(0:04) Morning, the reading this morning is from the Gospel of John chapter 11 verses 43 and 44. I’ll (0:11) be reading from the New King James. Now when he had said these things he cried with a loud voice (0:18) Lazarus come forth and when he who had died came out bound hand and foot with grave clothes (0:24) and his face was wrapped with a cloth Jesus said to them loosen and let him go. (0:30)
2nd Reader (0:35 - 1:28): Roger Raines
John 19:38-40:
(0:35) Morning, we’ll stay in the book of John chapter 19 verses 38 through 40. (0:44) After these things Joseph of Arimathea being a disciple of Jesus but a secret one for fear of (0:53) the Jews asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus and Pilate granted him permission (1:00) so he came and took away his body. Nicodemus who has first come to him by night also came (1:09) bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloe about 100 pounds of weight so they took the body of Jesus (1:19) and bound it in linen wrapping with spices as is the burial custom of the Jews. This concludes this reading (1:28)
Transcript (0:04 - 31:39), Preacher: Mike Mathis
(1:34) Good morning everyone. It is once again my duty to present a portion of God’s word to you. (1:48) We pray that it’s time that everyone is healthy enough and feeling well enough (2:00) and we do pray for the well-being of all of us and our loved ones.
Now the title of my lesson is (2:17) The Grave Clothes of Jesus. Now this is a peculiar lesson if you look at it but (2:27) we’re going to look at this particular matter. There’s not much said about Jesus' grave clothes.
(2:44) There’s just two places that it mentions that his grave clothes were seen. (2:58) One is in Luke the 24th chapter verse 12 it is and it simply says that Peter saw (3:16) the clothes of Jesus. He sees only the linen cloth (3:26) and then the next time that it is (3:32) actually referred to is in John 20.
(3:40) Now have you ever wondered why Jesus' grave clothes are recorded in the scriptures? (3:53) That you would even have mentioned in the scriptures that Peter and John (4:05) see his clothes. Why would other than his wrappings they wrapped him in the clothes (4:18) where he even finds you know all that is seen is his clothes? (4:27) Well I would say that it is so false reports may be put to rest and there are plenty. (4:38) We always watch the death package videos Wednesday and mentioning the death of Christ (4:53) on that video that we saw Wednesday night and the things that people will come up with (5:05) in order to debunk Jesus' divinity, Jesus' resurrection, his being the son of God.
(5:18) All the things that they come up with we should not listen to all these things (5:31) that would weaken our faith if we listen to them. We should stay with the scriptures. (5:40) And I learned just one thing one more item that they have said in repudiating (5:54) Jesus' resurrection and I’m going to say here even before I even get into anything (6:04) that his grave clothes prove he arose from the dead.
I’m going to use a scripture in order to (6:17) figure this out but we’re going to discuss some falsehoods being told in the effort of discrediting (6:29) his death and burial and resurrection. Some of the things that they bring up (6:40) but I’m going to talk about mainly this morning something that came to my attention first (6:51) in the 70s and that is this what is called the Shroud of Turin. This is a piece of cloth (7:08) that was found in Turino, Italy.
(7:15) They found this and it has an imprint of a face on it. This were performed on it and others. (7:36) Now when I first heard about this in the 70s (7:46) double tests done on that face some man claimed that the claim is that it has the face of Jesus (8:05) and this man who performed some kind of test on this face (8:15) and since it was being claimed that it has the face of Jesus.
His statement was (8:24) that if Jesus had not died on the cross he would have died later on and I don’t know (8:35) if he named a specific disease or if he just said some disease. (8:47) That comes from lack of scriptures, knowledge of the scriptures. God had all this planned out (9:00) and what Jesus came to this earth to do was to fulfill God’s will and he did it.
(9:16) He accomplished it when he died upon the cross. He accomplished it when he came forth from the grave. (9:27) But this man or these people claim that it has the face of Jesus.
(9:39) Now I did a little more research online on this Shroud of Turin. (9:48) When I was reading it at first there were measurements given on this cloth (10:02) and I wasn’t satisfied with what I was reading. (10:08) The measurements, I didn’t get the whole measurements what the problem was.
(10:16) So I typed in what is the measurements of the Shroud of Turin. I got it and the measurements of the Shroud of Turin is 14 feet 5 inches long by 3 feet 7 inches wide. (10:44) I want you to keep these measurements in mind because when we are looking in the cloths and the scriptures (11:00) we’re going to find something that just doesn’t come close.
(11:11) But this body was laid lengthwise on his back on half the cloth and the other half laid over him covering his face. (11:33) Now just keep that in mind because that’s going to be important. (11:41) Now the claim is that the face on that cloth is the face of Jesus.
(11:54) Now since I don’t know anything about all these tests that they perform on this cloth and upon the face of this individual (12:18) I’m not even going to attempt to get into the procedures they use. (12:28) There is one thing that I am going to do. (12:33) I am going to refute the claim that that’s not the face of Jesus.
(12:43) For one thing, these people just don’t have the knowledge of the method that the Jews used in preparation for birth. (13:06) When you lack that knowledge you can presume and assume anything you want. (13:16) Now at the time of Jesus there was a method that they used.
(13:28) Now here’s the important part. (13:33) When they wrapped the body in preparation they would take linen strips and wrap around the body, the legs and the torso. (13:56) And they would wrap that body.
(14:02) Now I appreciate the reading that John Tester read to us and also the reading that Roger read to us. (14:22) But in John 11, 43 through 44, this is at the tomb of Lazarus who had died. (14:45) And the people are mourning his death and they are there at a grave site where he’s buried.
(14:56) Now let’s keep in mind that the account says that Lazarus was four days dead. (15:12) Now there is no trick in this as maybe some would like to say. (15:23) But beginning on verse 43.
(15:28) Now when he had said these things he cried out with a loud voice, Lazarus come forth. (15:38) And he who died came out bound hand and foot with gray clothes. (15:50) And his face was wrapped with a cloth.
(16:02) Jesus said to them, loose him and let him go. (16:11) Now his body has been wrapped. (16:17) It’s his body.
(16:21) And they have a face cloth on his head that covers his face. (16:34) Now let’s go to the 19th chapter of John and chapter 19. (16:48) Beginning with verse 38.
(16:53) After this Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, (17:07) asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. (17:13) And Pilate gave him permission. (17:16) So he came and took the body of Jesus.
(17:21) And Nicodemus, who had first came to Jesus by night, (17:28) also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. (17:39) Then they took the body of Jesus and bound it in strips of linen (17:50) with the spices as the custom of the Jews is to bow. (18:00) Notice that.
(18:04) These strips of linen are binding his body. (18:16) Now, if you’re wondering about the head cloth, it’s coming up. (18:24) But notice how they prepared, rather, Jesus' body.
(18:33) Now in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden. (18:38) And in the garden, a new tomb in which one had been laid. (18:46) So there they laid Jesus.
(18:57) So there they laid Jesus because of the Jews' preparation day. (19:03) For the tomb was nearby. (19:07) Now, I was reading… (19:12) I have the Tree of Life’s version of the Scriptures.
(19:20) Now, the Tree of Life has the whole Bible translated out of the Hebrew. (19:29) Now, I’m going to use the Tree of Life version to read the chapter 20. (19:47) Now, they laid Jesus in the tomb early in the morning on the first day of the week.
(19:59) While it is still dark. (20:05) It says here, Marian, but we know her as Mary, from Magdala, comes to the tomb. (20:17) She sees the stone had been rolled away from the tomb.
(20:23) So she comes running to Simon Peter and the other disciple. (20:30) The one Yeshua loves. (20:34) Now, this one that Yeshua loves is mentioned here as the author of the book of John.
(20:50) She tells them, they’ve taken the master out of the tomb. (20:55) And we don’t know where they’ve put him. (21:00) Then Peter and the other disciple set out going to the tomb.
(21:09) The two were running together. (21:12) But the other disciple outran Peter and arrived at the tomb first. (21:22) Leaning in, he sees the linen strips lying there, but he didn’t go in.
(21:34) Then Simon Peter comes following them. (21:39) And he enters the tomb. (21:43) He looks up on the linen strips lying there.
(21:50) Now, let’s get this real close. (21:59) And the face cloth that was used for the head that covered the face. (22:08) Now let’s listen to it.
(22:13) And the face cloth that had been on his head. (22:18) It was not lying with the linen strips. (22:27) But was rolled in a place by itself.
(22:37) This face cloth is not attached to the rest of his clothes. (22:49) And we can call it the rest of the clothes. (22:53) And one translation I have in the New King James Version.
(23:01) The word is spelled C-L-O-T-H-S. (23:07) Cloths. (23:09) With the rest of the cloths.
(23:12) That’s correct. (23:14) Because it’s strips of linen cloth that is used. (23:26) It cannot be 14 feet.
(23:30) And by approximately 4 feet wide. (23:35) It can’t be 14 feet long. (23:41) So if we read the scriptures.
(23:44) We’re going to see that that shroud of turn. (23:49) Has no connection at all with the body of Christ. (23:56) Now don’t ask me whose body it is.
(23:59) Because it doesn’t say. (24:02) I don’t know. (24:04) I’m wondering if that shroud of turn.
(24:13) That they refer to it as. (24:18) Ever was out of Italy in the first place. (24:24) I’m wondering if that cloth.
(24:30) Was something that always had been in Italy. (24:36) And there it is. (24:38) Found in Torino, Italy.
(24:43) And it is called the shroud of turn. (24:49) Now I don’t know whose face is on that. (24:56) Shroud.
(24:58) But I know who it isn’t. (25:01) It isn’t Christ. (25:05) Well what happened to Christ’s cloths? (25:11) I don’t know.
(25:14) I’m not told. (25:17) What is important though. (25:21) I want to read this.
(25:25) Again. (25:27) Then Simon Peter comes following him. (25:32) And he entered the turn.
(25:35) He looks upon the linen strips lying there. (25:44) They’re lying there. (25:46) As if it has the body of Christ.
(25:54) Wrapped in those linen cloths. (25:59) And that face cloth. (26:04) Now you know my Bible.
(26:07) I think there’s two versions. (26:10) One refers to that head cloth as napkin. (26:16) And the other refers to that face cloth as handkerchief.
(26:25) Definitely cannot be the shroud of turn. (26:31) But there’s one thing that it does tell us. (26:37) There is no body there.
(26:40) Just the cloths. (26:42) Just lying there. (26:45) Without the body.
(26:48) Well what happened? (26:51) I know there are some things that got floating around. (26:59) And are still being floating around. (27:06) But I’m going to say without a doubt.
(27:12) His body is not there because he resurrected. (27:16) And it’s proof that he resurrected. (27:22) We’ve got one piece of evidence here.
(27:28) Among a lot of other pieces of evidence. (27:33) Even in the Bible. (27:35) That proves without a shadow of a doubt.
(27:38) That Christ arose. (27:41) And he arose from the dead. (27:46) You know.
(27:48) When Jesus died it seemed like. (27:53) The end. (27:56) It seemed like everything.
(27:58) Come to an end for these people. (28:02) And as I said in the last sermon that I gave. (28:08) One of the last ones.
(28:10) That the next three days. (28:15) From the death of Christ. (28:19) Till the first day of the week.
(28:22) Must have been the darkest days in the history of man. (28:31) They didn’t know what to do. (28:33) They didn’t know what to believe.
(28:35) And even on the first day of the week. (28:38) Two of his disciples. (28:41) Didn’t really know what to make of things.
(28:45) You know Jesus dying. (28:49) Then here it is on the first day of the week. (28:53) They’re hearing that he arose from the dead.
(28:59) They just don’t know. (29:01) Because they didn’t understand that he was supposed to do that. (29:07) Rise from the dead.
(29:09) But you know he won the victory. (29:13) When he came out of that grave. (29:18) He won the victory.
(29:20) We can too. (29:22) We can have all these things thrown at us. (29:27) We can have everything.
(29:30) Satan can throw fiery darts at us. (29:35) But if we solemnly believe what the Bible says. (29:41) And we truly believe that.
(29:46) It will give us hope. (29:52) That those who are dead. (29:57) At the time of Christ’s return.
(30:00) They too will rise from the grave. (30:06) Just as he did. (30:09) And it can give us hope.
(30:13) Who are doing our level best. (30:18) To live pure lives. (30:22) And to have that obedience.
(30:25) Of faith. (30:29) That we can be. (30:31) If we are in the grave.
(30:34) That we can arise too. (30:37) And be with Christ. (30:39) But if we are living at the time Christ returns.
(30:44) We will all meet him in the air. (30:48) And evermore be with him. (30:50) And we can gain the victory.
(30:56) So that is. (31:00) The first part of my lesson. (31:04) And I know that I took.
(31:07) This time to talk about mainly the Shroud of Turin. (31:12) But there are some other things tonight. (31:14) That I am going to delve into.
(31:18) And we are going to look at these things. (31:22) And we are also going to look at the scriptures. (31:27) And what they say.
(31:30) So if you want to hear the second part of this. (31:36) Be here tonight. (31:38) You will hear it. (31:39)
