Matthew 1:21-23:
(0:04) Good morning, for this morning, God’s word, he gives us Matthew chapter 1, verses 21 through (0:17) 23. (0:19) He says, she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his (0:27) people from their sins. (0:30) Now, all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet. (0:35) Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bear a son, and they shall call his (0:42) name Emmanuel, which translated means God with us. (0:49) Amen. (0:50)
2nd Reader (0:55 - 1:20): Roger Raines
Acts 4:12:
(0:55) Good morning. (0:56) I’m reading from the book of Acts, chapter 4, verse 12. (1:04) And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under the heaven that (1:12) has been given among men by which he must be saved. (1:18) We conclude this reading. (1:20)

(1:25) Good morning, church. (1:27) Good to see everyone out that’s here at the building. (1:36) And if anyone is on the phone, on the conference line, we also welcome you, as it is now my (1:56) turn in the rotation to speak to you, as the men that speak have in the rotation.
(2:15) I’m pleased to have that opportunity to do so this morning. (2:20) So, in a way, the first song and the last song that has just been sung is an introduction (2:42) to the lesson that I have entitled, Names. (2:51) And the reason, there is one certain name that seems to have cropped up in my videos (3:06) on YouTube, one name that seems to come up.
(3:16) But, you know, it has been argued that there is nothing in the name. (3:27) People that seem to want to differ from what is taught in the Bible, that there is one (3:38) church, that there is one name that we ought to wear. (3:49) And people want to argue that names don’t mean anything.
(3:59) But we’re going to find out in this lesson whether or not that names have anything, that (4:09) what the names are, whether they mean anything. (4:17) I’ve heard someone say, a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet. (4:32) But you’re going to see from my lesson, we’re not intending to call a rose anything else (4:40) except rose.
(4:45) And we don’t want to call other things other names than what they have been given. (4:59) And for those that would say that there is nothing in a name, it would be good if they (5:12) would learn a lesson. (5:14) If someone would write a check out, written A to the order of, or X amount, and not find (5:29) that check, and let that person go to some financial institution or bank and see if (5:41) they can cash that check.
(5:47) I know that there has been an occasion that a check has been refused because it hasn’t (5:58) been signed. (6:00) Someone didn’t sign it and the name might be in there. (6:09) They refused to cash it.
(6:12) The person’s name gives that bank or financial institution how to change that check. (6:24) And if there is nothing in a name, then an explanation is needed as to why when a woman (6:36) named Karen displays arrogance on one occasion, every other woman who displays the same arrogance (6:56) has the name Karen attached to her. (7:02) Now I’m going to say this, that there have been videos and stories on YouTube that tell (7:19) about certain women displaying ugly tendencies that are called Karen.
(7:31) Now their given name may be something else, but they’re called Karen only because this (7:46) original woman displayed arrogance and her name happened to be Karen. (8:00) And you know people like to hear their names instead of hearing, hey you. (8:10) If one wishes to address somebody, you need to say the name or you ask the person’s name (8:22) if they don’t know it.
(8:26) They need to address that individual by the name. (8:33) People like to hear their name. (8:39) Names have meanings and we found that out early in the Bible.
(8:48) In Genesis, Adam, Adam is called Adam because he’s taken of the ground. (9:01) Eve is named Eve, her name means life or life given. (9:11) Cain is named Cain because his name means acquired because he said she has acquired a man child.
(9:31) And Abel, I looked that up according to Young’s analytical lexicon and it said that his name (9:46) means transitory or fleeting, temporary. (9:57) Now Abel lost his life at the hands of his brother because Cain was not pleased with (10:08) God’s rejection of his sacrifice. (10:15) But names mean something.
(10:19) I don’t know if you ever looked up what your name means. (10:28) Be interested. (10:32) I researched the name Karen.
(10:40) It comes from a Greek word which I might even want to try to type. (10:47) But this Greek word means pure. (10:52) In the Old Testament, a name is linked to the Hebrew word K-E-R-E-N.
(11:03) Karen spelled K-A-R-E-N. (11:07) But this word K-E-R-E-N translated means power, strength or power. (11:22) Psalm 18.2 attributes divine deliverance and fortification from God.
(11:38) And this word K-E-R-E-N is also associated with light and radiance. (11:52) Now, the real Karen showed lack of purity and light. (12:00) The other women who are actually fictitious characters in these stories.
(12:12) And it becomes obvious if you go further along with those stories. (12:19) Some of the women behave really, really badly. (12:28) And some commit criminal acts.
(12:31) But as I said, it’s fictional characters. (12:36) But the thing that is known on this is these women are given the name Karen. (12:50) Well, the real Karen showed lack of purity and light.
(12:58) While the other women are actually fictional characters. (13:03) Well, let’s talk about a true person. (13:09) Jesus.
(13:10) Actually, Yeshua should be the name. (13:18) Yeshua is the name by which is given Jesus. (13:27) Yeshua means deliverance, salvation, saving.
(13:34) And notice that it is said in there that his name is given. (13:41) Because he will save his people from their sins. (13:53) Another name for Jesus that was in the first reading is Emmanuel.
(14:08) Which means in translation, God with us. (14:15) We see names have meanings. (14:23) And we find that there is no other name under heaven whereby we must be saved.
(14:34) This is according to Acts 4 and verse 12. (14:41) Nor is there salvation in any other. (14:46) For there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
(14:59) So his name, by his name we are saved. (15:08) Turning to Philippians 2. (15:15) I want to read verses 5-11. (15:25) In Philippians 2. (15:37) Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.
(15:44) Who being in the form of God did not consider it rightly to be equal with God. (15:54) But made himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bond-servant and coming in the likeness of men. (16:07) And being found in appearance as a man.
(16:10) He humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. (16:23) Therefore God has highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name. (16:37) That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.
(16:42) Of those in heaven and those on earth and of those under the earth. (16:51) And that in every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. (17:05) Notice, Jesus in former times was in heaven, he was in heaven.
(17:16) But he came down and became flesh. (17:23) Became in the form of man. (17:27) And he became in the form of a bond-servant.
(17:31) Coming in the likeness of men. (17:36) And he being found in appearance as a man. (17:42) He humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
(17:53) Notice that Jesus kept every command that God has made and he kept it perfectly. (18:04) He did not sin, but he died a violent death for us as if he was a sinful man. (18:15) Very, the worst, but he was the best.
(18:20) And that by going all the way, dying upon the cross, God has highly exalted his name above every name. (18:39) These people that think there’s nothing in a name, God has given his name above every name. (18:50) And there’s going to be a time that every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God and the Father.
(19:06) But for some it’s going to be too late. (19:10) Now they are denying him. (19:14) They’re going to know that he exists.
(19:20) But his name is above all other names. (19:27) And we should worry his name. (19:31) But you know what that name is? (19:33) That name is Christian.
(19:36) Just Christian. (19:40) It’s not a hyphenated name. (19:44) We’re just Christian.
(19:47) In Acts 11 and 26, his disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. (20:00) They weren’t the first Christians, but they were first called Christians. (20:06) Now I believe that this is a divinely called name.
(20:13) I know that it’s been ridiculed. (20:20) People have ridiculed that name. (20:23) But I believe that that name Christian, if they are called Christians, that’s the name that God has divinely called Christ’s fathers.
(20:45) In 26-28, Peter Glipper, when Paul was facing him, told Paul that almost you persuade me to be a Christian. (21:09) Or it was questioned, are you almost persuading me to be a Christian? (21:18) But anyway, that is Peter’s almost. (21:26) We shouldn’t be almost.
(21:30) We should all the way where his name is. (21:36) Verse Peter 4 and verse 16. (21:44) I want to start with verse 14.
(21:56) If you are an approach for the name of Christ, blessed are you for the spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. (22:15) On their part he is blasphemy, but on your part he is glorified. (22:23) But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evil doer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters.
(22:35) Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter, a name Christian. (22:59) Christian has come to be the name of Christ for the fathers of Christ. (23:11) We should be proud of the name Christian.
(23:15) We should not be ashamed of it. (23:20) We should be willing to wear the name Christian because he gave his life up for us. (23:29) He gave his life that he might redeem us from sin as we have been discussed in Bible class during the teaching.
(23:47) We need to learn that he died for us. (23:53) And we ought to be willing to wear his name and we ought to be Christians. (24:01) So the invitation is given.
(24:08) Are you wearing his name proudly? (24:16) Are you a Christian? (24:19) If not, will you not come to wear Christ’s name? (24:26) Will you not be willing to wear that name even if you have to suffer for that name? (24:38) Love of God sent Peter’s day and in the days of Paul that suffered persecution for being Christians, followers of Christ. (24:51) Even today, there are those even in foreign lands that have been persecuted for being Christians, for wearing his name. (25:08) Therefore, will you not wear it even if it comes to suffering for it? (25:16) Will you be proud to wear the name Christian? (25:22) Yes sir, there is something in the name.
(25:29) Christ’s name means something. (25:33) Everyone’s name has got a meaning. (25:38) You may like the meaning of your name, you may not.
(25:44) But it has a meaning. (25:46) And Christ’s name means a lot. (25:49) So will you not come and will you not be ready to wear his name proudly? (26:00) Why not come while we stand and sing?
