(0:03) Greetings, everyone, those that are at the building and on the conference line. (0:15) We want to welcome you. (0:20) The scripture reading for tonight will be taken from Acts 11, 15 through 17. (0:36) Acts 11, 15 through 17.
(0:43) Peter is doing the talking, defending him, his going to enter Cornelius, who is a Gentile, (0:59) and telling them just the reason that he went there. (1:11) And in verse 15, he said, (1:16) And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning. (1:26) Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, (1:33) God indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit. (1:44) Therefore God gave them the same gift as he gave us, (1:50) and we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. (1:56) Who was I that I could withstand God? (2:01)

(2:03) We’re going to do part two of the lesson we started this morning entitled Being Filled. (2:18) Tonight I’m going to talk about being filled with the Holy Spirit. (2:28) There are a lot of people that become confused with the Holy Spirit and being filled, (2:40) and especially when it comes to baptism. (2:46) It seems like every time that baptism is mentioned, (2:51) they automatically think of being baptized in the Holy Spirit.
(2:58) They seem to think that is what baptism refers to. (3:05) But we’ll get into that in a little while. (3:10) But being filled with the Holy Spirit does not generally mean baptism of the Holy Spirit.
(3:21) We started out in the introduction in Luke 1 and verse 15 (3:36) that the angel appeared to Zacharias, and he is going about his priestly duties. (3:50) And the angel announces to him that he and his wife will bear a son, (4:05) or his wife Elizabeth will bear him a son. (4:11) And he says in verse 15, (4:15) For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink.
(4:25) He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. (4:36) Think of that. (4:39) Holly’s then Elizabeth’s womb will be filled with the Holy Spirit.
(4:48) In verse 41 of this chapter, (4:56) this is when Mary, after she receives the announcement that she will bear a son, (5:09) and his name will be called Jesus, (5:14) and he will be conceived of the Holy Spirit. (5:21) She is a virgin. (5:24) And when the angel told her that she would have a son, (5:33) and that this son will reign over the house of Jacob forever, (5:41) and of his kingdom there will be no end.
(5:45) But she says, (5:47) And Mary said to the angel, (5:51) How can this be, since I do not know a man? (5:57) So she wonders about that. (6:02) She knows that what it takes in order to have a child. (6:08) The angel said, (6:09) That the Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the highest will overshadow you.
(6:17) Therefore, also that holy one who is to be born will be called the Son of God. (6:27) And then he tells her that her relative Elizabeth was in her sixth month of pregnancy. (6:44) She has conceived a son in her old age, (6:53) which is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.
(7:01) For with God nothing will be impossible. (7:05) But in verse 41, when Mary enters the house and greets Elizabeth, (7:16) And it happened when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, (7:23) that the babe leaked in her womb, (7:27) and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. (7:35) And then in verse 67, (7:38) when the angel announced to him he would bear a son, (7:53) and his name would be John, (7:56) he questions the angel, (7:59) and the angel says, (8:02) Because you do not believe, you will be mute.
(8:06) So when the family gathered together (8:10) in order to give him a name, (8:18) they asked his father to write on a tablet, (8:29) His name is John. (8:32) So they all marveled. (8:34) And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loose, (8:39) and he spoke praising God.
(8:43) And then in verse 67, (8:47) Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, (8:54) and prophesied saying, (8:57) And so we see that John was filled with the Holy Spirit in his mother’s womb, (9:07) Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, (9:12) and Zacharias, when he wrote that the babe would be named John, (9:24) and he began to speak, no longer being mute, (9:31) he was filled with the Holy Spirit, (9:34) and began his prophecy in the verses 68 through 79. (9:49) So obviously here being filled does not necessarily follow (9:57) that they were baptized. (10:01) We can’t call this a baptism of the Holy Spirit.
(10:09) But in Acts 1, we come to where after Jesus arose, (10:22) and he appeared to his disciples, (10:29) and he was with them for 40 days, (10:35) and he manifested himself, (10:42) giving many infallible proofs, (10:47) being seen by them during 40 days, (10:51) and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. (10:58) In verses 4 and 5, (11:05) we have, (11:06) and being assembled together with them, that is, the disciples, (11:12) he commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, (11:17) but to wait for the promise of the Father, (11:21) which he said, You have heard from me. (11:26) For John truly baptized with water, (11:30) but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit (11:34) not many days from now.
(11:40) So this is a promise. (11:47) Only the one who makes the promise (11:52) is the one who will keep that promise. (12:01) If people would understand that these disciples, (12:09) Jesus said, would be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
(12:17) And so in those days after Jesus ascended, (12:24) they met together in the upper room, (12:31) and it said, (12:32) These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication (12:37) with the women and Mary, the mother of Jesus, (12:43) and with his brothers. (12:47) And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples. (12:53) Altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty, (13:00) and said, (13:02) And what he was saying, that Judas Iscariot (13:14) had betrayed Jesus, and he fell, (13:20) and now they want to pick someone (13:26) who should be qualified to take his place.
(13:34) There had been eleven disciples since he committed suicide, (13:41) hanging himself. (13:45) So they centered on two. (13:51) They proposed two.
(13:53) Joseph called Barsadus, who was surnamed Justice, (13:58) and Matthias. (14:00) And they prayed, saying, (14:02) You, O Lord, know the hearts of all. (14:06) Show which of these two you have chosen (14:10) to take part in this ministry, (14:13) an apostleship from which Judas, by transgression, fell, (14:20) that he might go to his own place.
(14:24) And they cast their lots, (14:27) and the lot fell on Matthias, (14:30) and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. (14:36) When the day of Pentecost had fully come, (14:41) this is Acts 2, and I’m going to read 1 through 4. (14:49) When the day of Pentecost had fully come, (14:52) they were all with one accord in one place. (14:57) And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, (15:01) as of a rushing mighty wind, (15:04) and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
(15:10) When there appeared to them divided tongues as of fire, (15:17) and one sat upon each of them, (15:21) and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit (15:25) and began to speak with other tongues (15:30) as the Spirit gave them others. (15:35) Now, the difficulty comes when we read Acts 2 and 1 (15:48) that says when the day of Pentecost had fully come, (15:53) they were all with one accord in one place. (15:58) Some are believing or maintaining that (16:05) A, the pronoun, goes back to the 15th verse, (16:13) which includes the names of about 120.
(16:23) But the last thing that was said just before stating (16:31) what’s in Acts 2 and verse 1, (16:36) it says, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. (16:43) That is the last thing said before this was said. (16:48) When the day of Pentecost had fully come, (16:52) they were all with one accord in one place.
(16:58) Now, if I was talking to you about a group of people (17:04) doing something, and they were meeting together (17:12) for a certain purpose, and after giving that account, (17:25) Scott and Gene comes through the door, (17:28) and I announce, well, here comes Scott and Gene. (17:34) They are coming through the door. (17:39) Do you think that I was talking about the group (17:44) that I was talking about before? (17:50) I don’t believe you would.
(17:53) You would believe that Scott and Gene, (17:55) but they refer to Scott and Gene. (18:01) So, they here refers to the twelve apostles. (18:08) Now that Matthias is numbered with these eleven, (18:13) that makes twelve.
(18:16) And it says, when the day of Pentecost had fully come, (18:20) they were all with one accord. (18:23) That is the apostles. (18:26) And it was to the eleven apostles that was left (18:35) that Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would baptize them (18:43) not many days hence.
(18:47) Now, he was with them forty days, (18:53) and after he announced this (18:59) and gave them their instructions, (19:06) he ascended into heaven. (19:12) And the day of Pentecost had fully come. (19:18) That is fifty days after the Passover.
(19:24) They were to count seven Sabbaths plus one day. (19:32) So, if he was there forty days, (19:38) and Pentecost comes later, (19:43) and it’s fifty days after the resurrection, (19:50) and it’s ten days later when he announced (19:55) about their being baptized, (19:59) and the Spirit did come upon them, (20:05) and they began to speak with other tongues. (20:08) And this is the baptism of the Holy Spirit (20:12) upon these apostles.
(20:15) And furthermore, (20:19) when they began to speak with other tongues, (20:25) and the noise that was being heard, (20:29) it brought the crowd together that was gathered there (20:33) for that festive day (20:36) that was observed under the old law. (20:41) They came together, (20:44) and they were confused because (20:48) they heard these men speaking in their own language. (20:55) Then they asked in verse seven, (21:00) and they were all amazed and marveled, (21:02) saying to one another, (21:05) Look, are not all these who speak Galileans, (21:12) which means that these apostles were Galileans? (21:17) We don’t know about the number of 120, (21:25) all of where they came from, (21:30) but they were certain that (21:33) these who were speaking in other tongues or languages (21:42) were Galileans.
(21:45) Furthermore, when they began to march, (21:54) in verse 13, saying, (21:57) They are full of new wine. (22:01) But Peter, standing up with the eleven, (22:06) raised his voice and said to them, (22:09) Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, (22:13) let it be known to you and heed my words. (22:18) It says Peter stood up with the eleven, (22:23) not the hundred and nineteen, (22:29) that it was unreasonable for them to say (22:33) that they were drunk, (22:34) that it was only the third hour of the day, (22:36) or in our reckoning time, (22:40) nine o’clock in the morning.
(22:45) And then in Acts 10, (22:55) we find that Peter goes to Cornelius, a Gentile, (23:06) because God sent an angel to this man (23:12) because of the fact that he feared God (23:16) with all his household. (23:19) He gave alms generously to the people. (23:22) He prayed to God always.
(23:27) And about the ninth hour of the day, (23:33) he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God (23:38) coming in and saying to him, (23:41) Cornelius, and when he observed, (23:45) he was afraid and said, (23:48) What is it, Lord? (23:49) So he said, (23:50) Your prayers and your alms have come up (23:53) for a memorial before God. (23:58) Now send men to Joppa and send for Simon, (24:02) whose surname is Peter. (24:05) And tell them that he is staying with the man (24:12) who is Simon a tanner.
(24:17) Go and to send for him (24:20) that he would tell him what he must do. (24:31) Now we find that Peter comes. (24:39) The men that he sends come.
(24:46) Before they come, (24:48) then a vision appears to Peter (24:52) where all kinds of animals, (24:56) clean and unclean, (24:58) and the Lord commands him to take and eat. (25:02) And he says, Not so, Lord. (25:06) But he does this three times to Peter, (25:11) bringing this down to him (25:13) and telling him to kill and eat.
(25:19) And then God tells him, (25:22) What God has cleansed you must not call common. (25:28) And as I said, this was done three times. (25:32) So then the ones that Cornelius sends (25:39) to get him a purchase, (25:44) and he is commanded to go down (25:47) and to go with these men without any question.
(25:54) And they tell him that Cornelius sent them (25:59) to take him to Cornelius. (26:05) So Peter arrives, (26:09) and he speaks to him. (26:13) And in verse 44 it says, (26:17) While Peter was still speaking these words, (26:22) the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word, (26:26) and those of the circumcision, (26:31) who believed, were astonished, (26:33) as many as came with fear, (26:36) because the gift of the Holy Spirit (26:39) had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
(26:43) For they heard him speak with tongues (26:47) and magnified God. (26:56) So here for a second time (27:01) is an account where there is the baptism (27:06) of the Holy Spirit. (27:13) And Peter answered, (27:15) And anyone forbid water, (27:19) that these should not be baptized (27:21) who have received the Holy Spirit, (27:24) just as we have.
(27:27) And he commanded them to be baptized (27:30) in the name of the Lord. (27:34) And they asked him to stay a few days. (27:39) Now, we have the baptism of the Holy Spirit here, (27:45) and then we have the command (27:48) for them to be baptized.
(27:53) And Peter said, (27:56) Well now, who can forbid (28:02) that these should not be baptized, (28:08) or forbid water, (28:11) that these should not be baptized? (28:17) And he commanded them to be baptized. (28:23) Now notice, (28:26) a Holy Spirit baptism was promised, (28:32) but the command to be baptized (28:36) needs to be obeyed (28:40) by those who he commanded to carry that out, (28:45) and by the one who seeks to be baptized. (28:51) They need to obey that command.
(28:59) As Jesus said, (29:01) He that believes and is baptized (29:04) shall be saved. (29:07) The baptism there is in water. (29:13) So then, (29:18) Peter is questioned by the Jewish brethren (29:23) because he went in to Gentiles, (29:27) and for Jew to deal with the Gentiles (29:33) is something that they frowned upon.
(29:40) Then it was unlawful for one to deal with the Gentiles. (29:48) And so Peter had to give his defense, (29:53) and he tells them, (29:56) and he also recounts the vision that he had, (30:01) for God had to convince him (30:05) that what God has called common, (30:10) called not uncommon, (30:13) or as other versions may have it, (30:18) do not call what God has cleansed unclean. (30:29) And so he had to prove to Peter (30:32) that it was all right to go to the Gentiles (30:38) and to speak to them.
(30:42) But in speaking to them, (30:46) in verse 15 that we read, (30:51) as I began to speak, (30:54) the Holy Spirit fell upon them (30:56) as upon us at the beginning. (31:00) That is, at the beginning of the Christian age. (31:05) Acts 2 brought in the Christian age, (31:08) the beginning of the church of Christ.
(31:16) And it is the beginning. (31:19) He said that it fell upon them (31:22) as upon us at the beginning. (31:27) Then I remembered the word of the Lord, (31:30) how he said, (31:32) John indeed baptized with water, (31:36) but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
(31:44) And so Cornelius and his household (31:47) received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. (31:52) Now, the Samaritans in chapter 8 of Acts, (32:00) there’s Philip preaching, (32:05) I believe, and they are baptized (32:08) in the name of the Lord. (32:14) And they see Philip, (32:18) who is performing the miracles that he does.
(32:24) And then there’s a sorcerer who also believes. (32:28) And when he was baptized, (32:30) he continued with Philip (32:31) and was amazed seeing the miracles and signs (32:35) which were done. (32:39) Now, here’s a catch that they need to notice.
(32:47) Now, when the apostles who were at Jerusalem (32:51) heard that Samaria had received the word of God, (32:55) they sent Peter and John to them. (32:58) Who, when they had come down, (33:02) prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. (33:08) Now, Peter told his people on the day of Pentecost (33:13) that they were to repent and be baptized, (33:22) every one of you, (33:25) in the name of Jesus Christ (33:27) for the remission of sins.
(33:31) And you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (33:37) They were baptized in the name of the Lord. (33:41) Certainly they were saved.
(33:46) But it took the apostles, (33:49) it took the apostles, (33:52) Peter and John, (33:54) to come down and to lay hands on them (34:00) that they receive the Holy Spirit. (34:04) That is the power to perform miracles. (34:10) Now, it took the apostles to lay hands on the people (34:16) to receive the Holy Spirit.
(34:19) That meant that no one else could impart (34:24) the gift of having the power to perform miracles. (34:33) And when the last apostle died, (34:41) no one passed on the power to perform miracles. (34:49) And so, obviously in this, (34:55) we do not have the Holy Spirit baptism.
(35:00) But we do have that these people were baptized. (35:04) They were baptized in the water (35:07) for the remission of sins. (35:12) And so, these people then obeyed the gospel (35:23) by obeying the command to be baptized.
(35:27) The only thing that they just didn’t have the power (35:31) to perform miracles. (35:35) And in conclusion, (35:41) we have seen, as we said this morning, (35:48) that we can be filled with knowledge of God’s will. (35:54) Also, the first of knowledge, (35:57) the fullness of God, (35:59) and be filled with the Holy Spirit, (36:02) as we talked about tonight.
(36:09) Now, if there is anyone who is subject (36:13) to the gospel invitation in any way, (36:17) we would ask that you do so (36:20) while we stand and while we sing. (36:24)
