The three passages in the New Testament from Matthew, Mark, & Luke that present the events surrounding Jesus expounding on the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit were used to combine them into this compilation of four events and Jesus response into eight points and finally Jesus warning regarding blaspheming the Holy Spirit.

Preceeding our text, Mark 3:13-19, has Jesus selecting 12 men from his disciples to be his apostles, (so this is very early in his ministry), to send them out to preach AND He gives them the power (authority, Luke says) to cast out demons… Jesus has the authority to enable others to drive out demons.

The texts - Matthew 12:22-32; Mark 3:20-30; Luke 11:14-23; 12:8-12.

Event 1 - Jesus healing, driving out demons

Mk 3:20; Mt 12:22, 23; Lk 11:14

Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, All the people were astonished and amazed and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”

Event 2 - Family accusation, He is out of his mind

Mk 3:21

When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”

Event 3 - the accusations

Mk 3:22; Mt 12:24; Lk 11:14-16

The teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem and the Pharisees said, “He is possessed by Beelzebub! It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that he is driving out demons.” Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.

Mk 3:30 (NIV)

30 He said this because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”

Event 4 - Jesus’ response

Point 1

Mt 12:25a; Mk 3:23; Lk 11:17a

Jesus knew their thoughts, so He called them and spoke to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan?

Point 2

Mk 3:24; Mt 12:25b; Lk 11:17b

If any kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand, it will be ruined,

Point 3

Mk 3:25; Mt 12:25c; Lk 11:17c

If a city or household is divided against itself, it cannot stand, it will fall.

Point 4

Mt 12:26; Mk 3:26; Lk 11:18a

If Satan opposes himself and drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? He cannot, his end has come.

Lk 11:18b

I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebub.

Point 5

Mt 12:27; Lk 11:19

And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they [the demons] will be your judges.

Point 6

Mt 12:28; Lk 11:20

But if I drive out demons by the Spirit (Lk: finger) of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

Point 7

Mk 3:27; Mt 12:29; Lk 11:21, 22

In fact, when a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. No one can enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, takes away the armor in which the man trusted and first ties up the strong man. Then he can rob his house and divide up the spoils.

Point 8

Mt 12:30; Lk 11:23

“He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.

BAtHS warning

Mt 12:31, 32; Mk 3:27-29; Luke 12:10

And so I tell you the truth, every sin and blasphemy of men will be forgiven them, but the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, he is guilty of an eternal sin. And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks- and blasphemes- against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

After BAtHS warning

Mk 3:30

He said this (warning re BAtHS) because they were saying, “He has an evil spirit.”
