Mary’s Devotion to Jesus
In our Wednesday night bible class, we have made it to the final period of Jesus life before his crucifixion. We discussed Mary’s anointing of Jesus' body. Some events happened in this time period just prior to his anointing. One such event caused a shift in the attitude of the religious leaders, taking a very dark turn towards Jesus to where they were actually plotting his death. So what attitude did the religious leaders develop towards Jesus? We are told later on in the story that Pontius Pilot detected their attitude right away when they brought Jesus before him to have him crucified.
Mark records in 15:9-10,
Pilate answered them, saying,
“Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
For he perceived that for envy the chief priests had delivered him up.
The Spirit guided Matthew to record the same thing in Mat. 27, therefore it was important to know that envy was the reason. Pilate was a skilled politician who was used to getting a good read on people in the Roman government, his survival depended on it, and he read these politically driven men accurately.
