Hebrews – "We Who Have Believed Enter"
The Wanderers
Those who wandered in the wilderness failed to reach God’s rest. Why?
-
They didn’t listen to his voice, Heb 3:7
-
Their hard hearts (by the deceitfulness of sin), 3:8,12
-
They grumbled & tested God, 3:8,9
-
Their evil, unbelieving hearts, 3:12
-
Their disobedience, 3:18
-
They were unable to enter because of their unbelief. 3:19
-
They were unable to enter because of their disobedience. 4:6
What were they like? They were baptized (into Moses) 1 Cor 10:2. They liked to go out to eat, drink, & play. They indulged in a little sexual immorality. They grumbled a little & tested God to see how far they could go (ie put God to the test) 1 Cor 10:7-10.
And they just didn’t believe God was able to do what he promised. Psalm 78:22,32
The Promise Still Stands
The promise of entering his rest still stands we are told in Heb 4:1. And “we who have believed enter that rest 4:2.
The writer makes this argument:
-
God rested on the 7th day from all his works, 4:4
-
They didn’t enter his rest, therefore it remains for some to enter it, 4:5,6
-
Because, if Joshua had given them rest then why does God speak later through David saying, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden you heart.” 4:7,8
-
So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 4:9
-
For whoever has entered God’s rest, rests with him. 4:10
Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. Hebrews 4:11
