A Study of Hebrews

After the writer of Hebrews brings to our attention the 95th psalm verses 7-11, which warns us not to harden our hearts like the Israelites did whom Moses brought out of Egypt, he gives us a warning:

Hebrews 3:12 (ESV) Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.

Then he gives us a contrast in Hebrews 3:13 (ESV), But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

The writer tells us the remedy for the hardening of hearts: EXHORT ONE ANOTHER that none of you may be hardened…​

He also tells us what can promote the hardening of hearts: by the DECEITFULNESS OF SIN.

Our sins are warring against our hearts, continuously pounding on them, toughening them up, and making them hard. And sin’s greatest asset is deceit. Sin promises delight and pleasure but it consequences are pain & death.

The writer implies that to prevent our hearts from hardening we need to apply a group effort exhorting one another. We can’t do it alone. He also stresses that it is a daily effort “as long as it is ‘today’.”

So let’s exhort (strongly encourage) one another “today” and not harden our hearts.
