Hebrews – 1st Argument & Warning
We have seen that the first chapter of Hebrews is the opening argument by the writer to lay the bedrock for the foundation of Christianity: The Son of God.
The 1st Argument
You Are My (God) Son, I shall be [his] Father
Psalm 2:7 (cited in Heb 1:5).
2 Samuel 7:14 (cited in Heb 1:5).
Angels Worship You (the Firstborn)
Hebrews 1:6 (Deut 32:43)
God Says, Your Throne & Scepter, O God
Heb. 1:8,9 (Psa 45:6)
Therefore, God, Your God…
Heb 1:9 (Psa 45:7 - The Father calls the Son, God)
You (the Son) are the Creator)
Hebrews 1:10-12 (Psa 102: 45-47)
The Son is preeminent & surpasses all others.
Angels serve those who inherit SALVATION
The First Warning – Hebrews 2:1-4
Therefore (based on the 1st argument) We ought to (the writer includes himself):
-
Pay greater attention – lest we fall away
-
If the word spoken by angels (before the Son became God’s spokesman) proved stedfast AND every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense
-
If we neglect SO great a salvation…
-
1st spoken thru the Lord
-
Confirmed to us by those who heard
-
God ALSO bearing witness by signs & wonders, works of power, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit
-
What’s the message?
God, Himself, in the form of the Son, has given us a message of SALVATION that if we neglect we cannot escape a just recompense (an appropriate punishment or reward).
