A Study of Hebrews

Now that we have had a taste of the "meat/solid food" of the gospel from the middle of Hebrews (4:14-5:10), we will go back to the beginning of the book to continue our study in the order that the Writer presented.

At the time of the writing of Hebrews, thought to be between AD 60 – AD 70, Christians were being persecuted by the Jewish leadership from near the beginning of Christianity, but now the Romans begin to persecute them too. The temple in Jerusalem is still standing and Judaism is a still functioning religion. Hebrew Christians see their Jewish neighbors unmolested. Many Christians begin to become weary and think of giving up and returning to Judaism.

Can Christianity withstand persecution? What message can be given to those under duress? Should they fight? Give in, give up? Do they have the strength to endure? What help can they expect from their faith?

What message will God send his faithful facing persecution? After all, Jesus faced persecution, surely, He would have something to say. What would you say to your brethren thinking of turning away from their faith? Would we tell them again of the importance of the elementary teachings? Repentance, faith, baptism, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment? Or is there something else, something more, to say…​

Hebrews is God’s message for such a time as this.
