Jesus Our Great High Priest, Hebrews 4:14-5:10 (WEB)
Our First Investigation
Our first look into the "meat/solid food" of the gospel in Hebrews revealed that Jesus is our Great High Priest. The only other reference to this fact in the entire Bible is found in Psalm 110:4, saying that the Messiah, King David’s descendant, would be a “priest in the order of Melchizedek.”
We learned that Jesus is not only "our great High Priest," but that he is the great High Priest of "our confession." We remembered that our confession (like Peter’s) is: Jesus IS the Son of God. And Jesus being made in the order of Melchizedek is the High Priest of that confession, that is, He is the High Priest of "the Son of God." That confession is the bedrock (petra) of our faith. Therefore, He is the High Priest of the bedrock of our faith.
Our High Priest is not JUST a mere man (he is a man in every way like his brothers) but He is also the Son of God. He is both Man and God (Deity). And since he was made just like us and tempted in every way we are, yet without sin, he understands our weaknesses and can help us in our time of need. Hebrews 5:1 told us that a high priest is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God. What better person to represent both parties between Man and God than Jesus who is both Man and God.
Now that we have had a taste of the "meat/solid food" of the gospel from the middle of Hebrews (4:14-5:10), we will go back to the beginning of the book to continue our study in the order that the Writer presented.
