Jesus Our Great High Priest
We are learning in our Hebrews class (Hebrews 4:14-5:10) that Jesus is our Great High Priest.
Hebrews 2:17 says: “Therefore he was obligated in all things to be made like his brothers, that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people.”
It was necessary for him to be just like us in every way. One of the things a High Priest does for us is to make atonement for the sins of the people.
Hebrews 4:14, Having then a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold tightly to our confession.
Jesus has already made it to heaven, we have a High Priest IN heaven acting on our behalf. So we can hold tightly to the fact that Jesus is the Son of God as we believe.
And it is not necessary for us to go through someone else to gain empathy from Jesus because Hebrews 4:15 says: For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.
He feels and understands our pain so…
Hebrews 4:16, Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.
