Types & Antitypes are Relationships

We are familiar with relationships

  • Parent child

    • Identifies the direction of the relationship

    • A child can also be a parent that has their own children

The most basic Biblical use of type, antitype

  • The symbol (type) points to the object (antitype)

    • Shows the direction of the relationship

    • Old Testament people, events, objects are types

    • New Testament people, events, objects are antitypes

    • Examples

      • Romans 5:14, Adam is a type of Christ

      • 1 Corinthians 5:7, Christ our Passover Lamb

      • 1 Peter 3:21, The flood and baptism

Other type, antitype relationships

  • Sometimes the type points to something that normally would think should be the type, for example:

    • Hebrews 8:5, make sure to build the tabernacle according to the pattern [type] shown you on the mountain.

      • The tabernacle is a type of Christ’s body — John 2:18-22; Matthew 27:37-44; Mark 15:26-32

      • However, when Moses is told to build the tabernacle he is told to make sure he builds it according to the pattern [type] shown him on the mountain. Exodus 25:40
